The Beautiful Life Lessons of Fall
Fall is definitely my favourite season for so many reasons. Not only is it beautiful but the way it's beauty plays out inspires me on how to be a better me. Here are some of the lessons I take away from this time of year.
1. Shed the baggage, and come back stronger!
Every year the tree leaves turn colours and eventually fall off to prepare for Winter, but we always know that in a few short months those same trees will be growing back stronger, bigger and better than ever! The same can be said for us humans. Sometimes we need to take a step back and assess what "baggage" may be present in our lives and eliminate it to be able to grow into the people we want to be. Maybe it's an unhealthy friendship, or a bad cupcake habit that you want to kick - when you finally shed the unneeded baggage you have the opportunity to grow into a healthier, happier you!
2. Instead of dread it, embrace it.
Many of us dread the dark, cold long winters we experience here in Canada. Fall is the first sure sign it's on its way which can cause many of us to begin experiencing depression and anxiety (Canadians have a 2-3% chance of experiencing Seasonal Affect Disorder (SAD) in their lifetime.) I encourage you to notice the way that Fall prepares to embrace Winter by shedding leaves, cooling the air, and frosting the ground. We have so much control over our experiences when we manage our thoughts towards those experiences. When you begin to feel dread towards the upcoming winter months try challenging yourself to come up with a few positive things you can look forward to about Winter. For example maybe you enjoy cozy sweaters and hot chocolate! Managing our negative thoughts is a strategy we can use towards almost everything in our lives, and if we learn to do it well we will be happier healthier people!
3. And of course the usual cliche but oh so true one - letting things go.
Forgiveness is often more for our own well being than it is for others. When we carry around hatred and grudges towards others we can get weighed down. We can find ourselves ruminating on a lot of negatives which can make us feel irritable, sad, angry or depressed. Just as the Fall leaves give way from the trees, I encourage you to find forgiveness in your heart for you, and let go of the grudges you may be carrying. You deserve to move forward with a light happy heart!
The different seasons of the year can teach us so much if we are willing to be present and connect with nature. These are my favourite 3 lessons for Fall but I am sure there are so many more! I wish you all a happy, healthy Fall season!
