An Honest Conversation About Reiki, Energy, and Healing

We are delighted to be welcoming Reiki and meditation to Aura, offered by a practitioner who brings real care and skill to this work. Whenever we add something new to our practice, we make ourselves a promise. We will be honest about it. So before we tell you why we are excited, we want to tell you the truth about what Reiki is, and what it is not.

What the research actually says

Let us start where the honesty has to start. The scientific research on Reiki is still young, and a lot of it is small or imperfect. Major health bodies, including the United States National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, are clear that there is no scientific proof of the energy field that Reiki is traditionally said to work through. If you have read that somewhere and wondered whether it was overstated, your instinct was a good one. We are not going to tell you Reiki channels a measurable healing force, because that is not something science has shown.

What the better studies do suggest is quieter and, to us, more interesting. A 2024 review that pooled multiple trials found that Reiki was associated with a meaningful reduction in anxiety. A 2025 review of over six hundred people found a small but real improvement in quality of life. Other studies link Reiki sessions to activation of the body's rest and recovery response, the calm settled state that the nervous system drops into when it finally feels safe. And across the research, Reiki has an excellent safety record, with no harmful effects reported. Nothing is taken, nothing is applied, the touch is gentle and can even be offered just above the body, and you stay in control the whole time.

So the fair summary is this. Reiki has not been proven to treat any condition, and we will never present it as a cure. What it does, again and again, is help people feel calmer.

Where measurement reaches its edge

Here is the part we find worth sitting with.

Science is wonderful at certain questions. Does this medication lower blood pressure more than a sugar pill. Does this dose work better than that one. Our most rigorous studies are built to isolate a single ingredient and test it against a convincing fake. That works beautifully for pills.

It works less well for an experience. When a study tries to test Reiki, it has to strip away the very things that may be helping, the warmth of attention, the stillness, the ritual, the feeling of being cared for by someone whose only task in that moment is you. And here is the surprising part. Even when those studies compare real Reiki to an imitation, people still tend to get calmer. That tells us something real about human beings. Sometimes what heals us is not a hidden mechanism. Sometimes it is presence, safety, rest, and the sense that our wellbeing matters to someone.

That is also why we are careful with the word energy. When you leave a session and say something released, or that you feel lighter, or more grounded, that is true to your experience. We do not need a meter to honor it. We talk all the time about heavy grief, or a room with a good feeling in it, and we understand each other perfectly. Energy, for us, is the language of how something feels, not a claim about physics.

We will be honest about the limits of that argument too. The fact that medicine has sometimes used good things before understanding them is a reason for humility, not a promise that Reiki will one day be proven. Humility runs both ways. What we can say with confidence is simply this. Some of what helps people heal lives in places our instruments were never built to measure. Presence is one. Calm is another. Reiki is one gentle way of offering them.

How Reiki fits at Aura

Reiki at Aura is a complement, never a replacement. It does not treat mental illness, and it is not a substitute for psychotherapy, medication, or medical care. We will always say so, because saying so is part of caring for you well.

What it can be is a support and a doorway. For someone too activated to find words, a calm body can come first. For someone carrying the weight of chronic stress, a reliable moment of deep rest has real value. For someone who has rarely been offered safe, unhurried, caring attention, the experience itself can be quietly healing. Offered alongside the therapeutic work we already do, with the same respect for consent and pace, Reiki extends what we have always tried to be, a place where people feel safe enough to heal.

That has always been the heart of it. Embrace your journey in an aura of hope and healing was never a promise of one right path. It was a promise of a place that meets you where you are, honestly, and with care.

If you are curious about Reiki or meditation at Aura, we would love to talk with you about whether it might have a place in your journey.
